Description
As part of a 2-year UCSF research study called Kidney Awareness Registry and Education (KARE), there is a new, variable-time job position for a  bilingual English/Cantonese-speaking research assistant (RA).


Here is a brief description of qualifications for the job.

This RA will conduct interviews over the phone to patients enrolled in the study:
The RA will call up to 200 study patients with chronic kidney disease 4 different times: 1 month, 4 months, 8 months and 12 months after enrollment.  Each phone interview will take up to 30 minutes.  The incumbent will enter data as the phone interview takes place.

Key Responsibilities

•         Calling patients to conduct survey over the phone

•         Entering data as phone survey takes place

•         Keeping meticulous control of who has completed survey

•         Data resolution

•         Provide updates of all call outcomes

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities -

•         Demonstrated fluency in Cantonese verbal and reading skills.

•         Fluency in written Chinese

•         Minimum 1-2 Years prior experience working with professional health teams, including patients, clinic providers, nursing staff and researchers.

•         Six months prior experience working collaboratively with adult patients with diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia to help them manage their own chronic conditions.

•         Minimum 1-2 years prior work experience in a clinical setting or healthcare facility helping patients with diabetes, hypertension and/or hyperlipidemia conditions, and using a disease registry to track a population of patients.

•         Demonstrated ability to use computers for data entry (e.g., in Microsoft Access and Excel), and email communication.

•         Demonstrated ability to track data [for example, the outcome of each call].

•         Ability to manage own time to efficiently complete responsibilities.

•          Must be able to travel within the City of San Francisco limits, and must use and provide own transportation resources.

 *   Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of experience in a health or social service field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 *   One year prior work or volunteer experience in direct patient contact in a clinical setting.

Problem Solving

Common problems solved by the employee:

•         One of the key roles of the RA is to engage and support low literacy patients with limited social resources to create an environment that will make patients feel comfortable to answer questions over the phone.

•         Coordinate with patients when would be a good time to call to conduct the survey over the phone.

Less frequent and more complex problems solved by the employee:

•         Patients may have concerns about how telephone surveys may interfere with clinic flow or change procedures.  RA will need to use team-work, communication skills and problem solving skills to address these concerns.


Problems/situations that are referred to this employee's supervisor:

•         Inappropriate patient interactions should be discussed with the project manager.


Please note that the hours worked per week will depend on how many calls are needed to make on a specific week.
